A Key Role To Sustainable Farming and Global Food Security…Review Of The GaLaBau 2024 Trade Show.

The Green-Blue Path Adaptation is an approach that combines water and vegetation to create sustainable solutions in the Landscaping and Gardening Industry. It builds upon 
earlier concepts of nature-based solutions and urban drainage system. 

Where green plants are installed on building walls and roofs to improve air quality, reduce heat, manage storm water, reduce runoffs and prevent flooding . This approach is widely used by Countries with severe flooding, heatwave, and disappearance of different species of plants, animals and other organisms in their ecosystem. 

As the demand for sustainable agriculture and resilient food systems grows, the Green-Blue Path will evolve for farming and food security.

Here's how:
-The adoption will increase, focusing on crop rotation, agroforestry which would improve soil health and biodiversity while reducing having to rely on chemical inputs.

-Combining Fish farming and Plant growing together in a closed loop-system will become more prevalent. Providing Protein and Vegetables while conserving water and reducing environmental impact on farming.

-Water-efficient Irrigation systems like drip irrigation and rain water harvesting will be critical. Smart irrigation systems using sensors and Ai will help optimize water usage and improve crop yields.

-The development and use of drought-resistant crops and livestock breeds will increase ensuring food security.

-Vertical farming and Rooftop cultivation will merge with the Green Blue Path strategy to supply fresh food in cities with limited land.

-Waste from one ecosystem like fish waste is used as an input in fertilizing Plants to help reduce resource consumption.


Throughout Europe, GaLaBau a term which also means “everything Gardening and Landscaping” is the only international platform in the world that hosts the entire range of Products and Services for the planning, construction and maintenance of Urban, Green and Open Spaces.

The event which was first held in 1974 in Germany which hosted 123 exhibitors and 4000 visitors was established so that visitors can explore new products, technologies and innovations. In September 2024, more than 66,000 visitors from 80 countries and 1100 distributors from 33 countries took part in the 25th edition of the trade show.

The International show is known for showcasing cutting-edge technologies, machineries and sustainable solutions for green and Open Spaces.

Construction and Maintenance machinery, Plant and Plant Parts, Urban Designs, Construction sites, building yards and a whole lot more that contribute to the necessary climate adaptation measures were presented at the Green-Blue Path.

Highlights of some of the Products that were exhibited:

1.Iconic Robot Mowers: Take for example the Iconic Robotic mower for sports grounds and golf courses. This adaptive mower adjusts moving patterns based on the grass growth and terrain. Eco-friendly, reduces emissions and noise. Robotic mowers often use GPS based systems for more advanced model to ensure all the areas of the lawn are covered evenly. It can be managed from a smartphone app for scheduling, setting and monitoring mower status remotely.

2. Retention and Vegetation Board: A structure designed to hold back soil, especially in areas with a slope or elevation change, preventing erosion or collapse. A Vegetable board is a method of integrating plants or vegetation with built structures, often used for landscaping, and erosion control.

3.Vertical Greening System: Also known as green wall or living wall, involves growing vegetation on indoor or outdoor vertical surfaces. A Vertical  Greening system combines advanced irrigation, structural engineering and plant science to create sustainable, functional green spaces on building facades.

GaLaBau is different from the other trade shows in the Industry because of its large-scale professional solutions. Other landscaping and gardening trade shows may have broader, more customer-oriented focus with more emphasis on Plant selection or hobby gardening but the international trade show specifically targets the industry.

In summary, the evolution of the green-blue path for farming and food security will involve a combination of land-based and water-based innovations, focusing on sustainable resource use, ecosystem preservation, and resilience to climate change.
